Solidarity
is the tenderness of humanity
Jorge Borges
In 2006, after reading René Cagnat's book on Central Asia "La rumeur des steppes",in which the former French diplomat recounts the 1970 deportation of the Yaghnobis, Hilde Lemey and Fernand Dhondt went to Tajikistan in search of the survivors of this miniority people. They took along pedagogic materials for the children and found out during their visit that there is a real need for a boarding school in the Yaghobi Valley so that the Yaghnobis get the opportunity to study their Sogdian language and culture. This school will be built by the Yaghobis themselves in their local traditional building style.
The distribution of the funds raised in Flanders will be coordinated through the local association “Renaissance of the Yaghobis”. This association is lead by the Yaghobi academic and professor in literature Mirzoyev Saifiddin, who is working at the Rudaki institute of Language and Literature, attached to the Tadjikistan Academy of Science in the capital Dushanbe. He is the author of Sogdian textbooks for the first four grades, published a Yaghnobi-Tajik dictionary and several articles and publications on the history of the Yaghnobis. Our financial support will enable to publish more textbooks in the Sogdian language and will also contribute to the creation of a library on the Yaghnobis.
